The winter is gone, summer is already showing its rage and here I am, looking for inspiration through my fabrics archives when I find this flannel, which should had become a trouser months ago and it’s still intact in the shop’s plastic bag.

It’s a good opportunity to use this chunky zippers that I was saving for a long time, waiting for the righ piece. Even better in the company of a few metals.

I don’t wanna write too much explanations about the concept around this piece because I don’t wanna bring it up too many clichés. I believe those images speak for itself with a pretty much – pardon the expression – in your face inspiration.

In what concern to the structure of this mask, I’m using as a base that same pattern that I’ve been working with in my last two pieces and I feel I have achieved an evolution in each one of them. What makes me still think in many others possibilities for it.

This is a bless since when it comes about craftsmanship I tend to get bored too quickly and hardly never want to do the same process twice in a row. So let’s keep pushing it while it lasts.

Outro dia recebi a notícia de que seria apresentado a fantástica Jessie Evans:

Jessie é uma artista única. Cantora, performer, saxofonista e loucona, carrega uma forte mistura de influências que variam entre jazz, electro e ritmos exóticos latinos. Essas influências reverberam não apenas na sua música, mas também em sua postura e look. Jessie é uma show woman.

Com a oportunidade de conhecê-la em sua passagem por Florianópolis, não pensei duas vezes e decidi fazer uma máscara inspirada_em e especialmente para a própria.

Num deadline apertadíssimo acabei não registrando a criação dessa peça, porém tenho imagens do resultado final, momentos antes de entregar a Jessie:

Utilizei como base a modelagem da última peça que eu havia feito, da série White Lies, para agilizar o processo e adorei o resultado. Agora estou com vontade de desdobrar essa mesma idéia em mais peças. É incrível como muitas vezes trabalhamos mais acertiva e objetivamente sob a pressão de um curto prazo. Vide a exposição e vide a peça para o Cena 11.

Aconteceu na última semana no Rio de Janeiro o 1º Congresso Nacional de Negócios de Moda, uma imersão nas principais ferramentas para a gestão de marcas que promoveu uma troca de conhecimentos entre profissionais integrantes de diversas áreas da indústria.

A convite do IBModa, tive a honra de integrar um dos painéis discutindo o “Design como fator de diferenciação” e dividindo a mesa com renomadas figuras do meio.

Iniciando as atividades Ricardo Leite, designer e sócio-diretor de criação da Crama Design Estratégico, refletiu sobre a acelerada demanda pelo novo dentro do mercado de consumo atual e suas apostas para o futuro.

“O mundo está absurdamente criativo e nos cobra uma postura criativa, de devolver a este mesmo mundo inspiração e ideias novas”.

Em seguida foi a minha vez de falar. Numa apresentação dividida em duas partes, comecei falando do meu trabalho dentro da indústria e as minhas impressões desse momento atual, focando especialmente no cenário do Sul onde estou inserido, de um panorama de quem está no centro dessa ávida cobrança por inovação.

Num segundo momento, um pouco mais relaxado (quem me conhece sabe que eu tenho um certo pavor de falar em público!) foi a vez do Face Couture. Apresentando o meu processo criativo por trás das peças, o conceito e a evolução do projeto, a estética abordada na apresentação das obras finalizadas X o work in progress documentado aqui, fiquei super feliz em sentir o interesse da platéia em saber mais desse universo que é tão pessoal pra mim. Várias pessoas me procuraram após o término do debate com algumas questões bem particulares, até o próprio Ricardo Leite sugeriu que numa próxima oportunidade eu estendesse ainda mais essa parte da apresentação.

Depois de mim veio a incrível Karlla Girotto, de quem eu sou fã e estava ansioso pra ouvir falar. Ela fez um discurso super coerente com o assunto em pauta e com ótimas frases que sintetizaram questionamentos e sentimentos de quem vive esse momento.

“O que te faz criar um objeto entre tantos já existentes?” O vigor criativo está naquilo que intrinsecamente nos sensibiliza, aquilo que Karlla chama de “verdade” de intenção. Somente a “verdade” de intenção é capaz de produzir potência nos objetos.

A locação do evento: Escola de Artes Visuais, no cinematográfico Parque Lage.

Mediando essa discussão estava Cláudio Freitas de Magalhães, Coordenador da Pós Graduação em Design PUC/RJ, que pontuou todo o painel com ótimas observações.

Inicia aqui a primeira parte de uma série de três peças intitulada “White Lies”.

Serão três máscaras brancas e já começo o trabalho focado no formato de apresentação delas. A cor é parte do contexto, porém irei revelando detalhes mais concretos ao desenrolar das próximas peças, uma vez que ainda não tenho um prazo definido para finalizá-las.

Bai Yiluo works often incorporate photography and traditional sculptural techniques, media disparate in their ancient and contemporary connotations. Bai draws upon these to develop installations which reflect the human condition as a cyclical struggle, torturously beautiful and poetically triumphant.

Bai’s Civilization is a haunting monument enshrining imperious power as a corrupted vision built on labourers’ toil. Made from terracotta, classical busts pose as emperors and slaves, pierced through and defined by agricultural tools, a life force and bane. Set upon twelve individual plinths, Civilization bridges reference to both Eastern and Western spiritualism, while its violent form suggests revolution, conflict, and rebirth as the isochronal quality of nature.

The artist Bai Yiluo was born 1968, Luoyang, Henan Prov, China. Lives and works in Beijing.

Enquanto eu não posto aqui as imagens oficiais máscara a máscara, deixo esse pequeno teaser para quem não pôde visitar pessoalmente a exposição.

Várias pessoas tem me perguntado se isso seria um encerramento do projeto, um resultado final. A resposta é: absolutamente não.

Pelo contrário. Sempre deixei bem claro que esse blog é apenas uma parte do projeto, sendo na verdade uma espécie de grande backstage. Partindo desse princípio, a exposição marca o nascimento dessas peças e dessa coleção, considerando que tudo mostrado aqui documenta a gestação delas, o antes.

Eu também me fiz essa questão por certo tempo e percebi nos momentos finais, antes da exposição, que essa na verdade é uma coleção aberta. A medida que as peças foram ficando prontas eu fui percebendo que elas naturalmente foram demonstrando semelhanças e ligações umas com as outras, formando grupos.

Quando lá no início do projeto eu lancei o título “Somewhere in between / among disguises, guilt and dreams” eu pensei apenas no significado geral da sentença, mas hoje olhando para o trabalho exposto eu consigo enxergar exatamente – e isso aconteceu sem planejamento algum - as peças se dividindo em disguises, guilt e dreams. Isso me faz querer desdobrar ainda mais todos esses elementos em muitas outras máscaras.

Portanto esse projeto segue em frente e por tempo indeterminado, com muitos e muitos planos à vista.

While I don’t post the official pictures mask by mask, here is a little teaser for those who couldn’t make it to the exhibition.

There are several people asking me if this would be some kind of closure, a final result to end this project. Well, the answer is: absolutely not.

It’s actually the opposite. I always told that this diary is only one part of this project, seen it as a live backstage. Therefore this exhibition marks the birth of this pieces and this collection, considering that everything shown here documents the creation of them, the before.

I also asked myself this question for some time and realized, in the final moments before the exhibition, that this is actually an open collection. And as the pieces were getting ready, I started to realize that they were naturally demonstrating similarities and connections with each other, forming groups.

In the early days of this blog, when I launched the title "Somewhere in between / among disguise, guilt and dreams", I just thought on the general meaning of this sentence. But now, looking to this work I can clearly see – and this happened without any plans – the pieces splitting between disguises, guilt and dreams. That makes me want to deploy all these elements even more in many other shades.

Therefore this project goes ahead with many, many plans in sight.

Estou tentando escrever esse post há três dias e não consigo por falta de tempo. O que significa que a exposição está ficando incrível.

Vou resumir em tópicos:

- Embora o Face seja Couture, a exposição será montada no lounge central do andar Denim Prêt-à-Porter, dentro do Sul Fashion Week.

- Para entrar em sintonia, pedi a um dos patrocinadores do evento, a Vicunha Têxtil, me enviar algumas peças do seu laboratório de testes.

- As peças chegaram:

- Peças devidamente desconstruídas a caminho de virarem máscaras.

Estou a menos de uma semana da primeira exposição marcada e as dúvidas não param de me atormentar. Esse post possui viés dramático, porém não deve ser motivo de preocupação – além de minha própria.

Além de detalhes de logística e da ambientação da própria exposição, ainda estou produzindo peças.

Como selecionar o que vai ser exposto de tudo o que já foi iniciado e consequentemente documentado aqui nesse diário? Como finalizar e apresentar com qualidade digna de uma exposição o que aqui foi “prometido”?

Essa semana fotografei todas as peças disponíveis, no estágio em que se encontram, para fazer essa seleção. Serão cerca de dez.

Como eu comentei em uma entrevista para o site da revista Criativa na semana passada, tenho passado por momentos de rejeição onde acho que nada é bom o suficiente e que preciso fazer tudo novo. Mas como apresentar apenas peças novas – desconsiderando a realidade do tempo, que torna impossível – e correr o risco de causar um grande estranhamento para quem for visitar a exposição, não conseguindo associar o trabalho exposto com o que foi desenvolvido ao longo do projeto?

Um dos casos é a máscara “The Face of NY”.

Entre tudo o que foi publicado sobre o meu trabalho, fotos dessa máscara apareceram em praticamente todos os artigos. Não por uma vontade minha, mas ela sempre foi escolhida para ilustrar. Logo concluo que as pessoas gostem dela e queiram ver pessoalmente. Aqui entra o grande dilema de exibir o que as pessoas esperam ver VERSUS o que eu acredito ser o melhor. O fato é que eu quero levar essa peça, mas não do jeito que está. Preciso levar para um próximo nível ou não vou conseguir conviver com ela no meio da exposição.

How can I make a good selection of what will be shown between everything that I have already started and therefore documented here in this diary? How can I finish and present with quality worthy of an exhibition what has been "promised" here?

This week I photographed all the pieces available at the stage where they are, to make this selection. There will be about ten.

As I talked to Criativa magazine last week, I’ve been going through some rejection period, where nothing is good enough and I need to make everything again. But how can I exhibit only new pieces and run the risk of causing a large strangeness for everyone visiting the exhibition, unable to associate what they see with the work developed here during the project?

One example is the mask “The Face of NY”.

Among all that was published about my work, this mask appeared in virtually every article, not by my request, but it has always been chosen. I can only conclude that people like this piece and want to see it live. Herein lies the great dilemma of showing what people expect to see versus what I believe to be the best. The fact is that I want to show this piece, but not as the way it is. I need to take it to the next level or I won’t be able to live with it in the middle of the exhibition.

Há tempos venho buscando essa imagem que me persegue, mas nunca havia sentado e pensado claramente em como executar. Agora é o momento e não dá mais para escapar.

Aqui uso técnica de chapelaria junto com uma armação feita com barbatanas, comumente usadas para dar volumes a anáguas (ou acabar com certos volumes em espartilhos) e mais alguns segredos.

Tudo handmade.

I was searching for this image who hunted me for a long time, but I had never stopped and thought clearly how to built it. This is the moment and I can't escape anymore.

Here I’m using some hatmaking techniques combined with a material common used to construct petticoat and corset structures - and a few other secrets.

As coisas estão mesmo intensas por aqui que fica difícil parar e postar.

Paralelo a todas as peças da exposição estou também desenvolvendo uma máscara especial para o Cena 11.

Eles são um grupo de dança (ultra) contemporânea donos de um trabalho único e extremamente autoral, reconhecidos no mundo por isso.

Há tempos tinha vontade de trabalhar com eles e recentemente fui surpreendido por um pedido da Karin Serafin, figurinista e uma das bailarinas do grupo, para que eu desenvolvesse uma máscara especial para uma apresentação.

O briefing dela foi bem específico: a peça é para uma coreografia já existente, executada por Letícia Lamela. O principal é a cor, que precisa ser igual a do laço abaixo, usado originalmente mas que agora é substituído pela máscara, como se tivesse subido e tomado conta do rosto.

Outro detalhe importantíssimo é que as quatro tranças da Leticia precisam ficar livres. Aqui em um vídeo exclusivo do ensaio é possível entender porque:

Karin ainda citou uma leve influência de super heróis e alertou que a boca e os olhos também precisam aparecer, o que é sempre muito importante saber.

Baseado nessas informações - e em tudo que como admirador eu já sabia sobre o Cena 11 - cheguei em um modelo. Vale observar que houve um breve período de testes primeiro, onde fiz duas modelagens completas e descartei, até chegar no desejado:

Esse é um protótipo para testar e realizar os ajustes necessários. Agora estou trabalhando na peça final, já com o material certo.

Along with the exhibition’s pieces I’m now developing a commissioned mask to Cena 11.

They are a (ultra) contemporary dance company with a unique and extremely authentic body of work recognized around the world.

I’ve been wanting to work with them for a long time now and recently I was surprised by the company’s stylist and dancer Karin Serafin, who asked me to create a mask for a performance.

Her briefing was very specific: the performance already exists and is featured by the dancer Leticia Lamela. The color has to be the same as the lace she uses on her waits, a coral pink tone, which is now replaced by the mask. As if the mask had gone up and embraced her face.

Another important detail: Leticia’s braids must be free to move. You can see why on the video above.

Karin also warned me that the mouth and eyes must be free as well – which for me is always important to say.

So I came up with this prototype and now I can move on the final piece, with the right fabric.

É com orgulho, prazer e tensão que anuncio a primeira exposição de máscaras do Face Couture.

A convite de Patrícia Lima, a mente brilhante por trás do Catarina Coletivo Criativo - que comunicou oficialmente dias atrás em seu blog – estarei exibindo uma seleção das peças aqui documentadas em seu novo evento.

Patrícia é uma visionária da moda catarinense, há anos trabalha para colocar os profissionais não só daqui, mas de todo o Sul em foco e por isso lança uma nova, excitante e necessária plataforma de negócios de moda no Brasil: o Sul Fashion Week e Denim Prê-à-Porter. Serão dois andares de tradeshow no hotel Magestic + desfiles espalhados pela cidade em três dias de evento para compradores e imprensa especializada.

Vai ser a primeira vez que exibo finalizadas e ao vivo as peças aqui documentadas, além de inéditas que ainda estarei desenvolvendo especialmente para a ocasião.

Nas próximas semanas mostrarei o desenvolvimento de todo esse trabalho e a montagem da exposição.

O evento acontece em Florianópolis nos dias 9, 10 e 11 de Junho. Nada como um deadline, não?

The power of a deadline

I’m proudly nervous to announce Face Couture’s first ever mask’s exhibition.

Invited by Patricia Lima, the brilliant mind behind the Brazilian magazine Catarina, I’ll be showing on their new event a selection of pieces here documented through the last months.

Patricia is truly visionaire of the Southern Brazilian fashion and always worked hard to put new talents under the spotlight and that’s why she is launching a new business platform for fashion in Brazil: Sul Fashion Week. There will be two floors of trade shows taking place at the luxurious Majestic Hotel in Florianópolis, plus several shows around town in two days of event, exclusively for buyers and press.

It's the first time I'll be showing finished pieces of this project and I’m still working on some new stuff especially for the occasion.

Sul Fashion Week is going to happen in Florianópolis on June 10th and 11th. There is nothing like a deadline, right?

Imagens da última semana em Curitiba durante um video shooting a convite de Thais Mendes e Robinson Barbosa.

Robinson é fotógrafo e Thais stylist. Eles são um casal vivendo em Londres a espera do seu primeiro filho.

Thais, esperta que é, acompanha o Face Couture desde o início e recentemente publicou uma entrevista superlegal sobre o projeto na revista Vice UK, da qual é colaboradora, dentro da série "Hot Young New Designers", que acabou saindo na edição impressa e online no Vice Style.

O vídeo, com lançamento previsto para Abril, apresentará um preview bem generoso de 5 máscaras finalizadas como jamais foram vistas por aqui – incluíndo uma inédita!

Aguardo ansiosamente! ^^

Robinson is a photographer and Thais is a stylist. They are a couple living in London waiting for their first baby girl.

Thais, as a smart girl, follows Face Couture since the early days and recently did an interview about the project in Vice Magazine, for which she colaborates, at the "Hot New Young Designers" serie of interviews.

The video is scheduled to come up in April and will present a generous preview of 5 finished masks in a way as never seen here before - including one never seen at all!

Foi demais o shooting pra capa do Mapuche nessa tarde de domingo! Produzimos diversas imagens para serem trabalhadas ao longo da divulgação do álbum, partindo da idéia inicial de usar estampas projetadas sobre a roupa e cenário brancos. A produção fluiu lindamente, vários amigos passaram para uma visitinha e houve momentos de interação com o povo que assistia via webcam toda a movimentação, resultando em sugestões super especiais que foram postas em prática imediatamente pela equipe.

Quem acompanhou a transmissão ainda pôde ter uma audição exclusiva do álbum, antes do lançamento e até mesmo antes do vazamento! Coisas que só o Face Couture proporciona. ^^

O Mapuche lança “She Unsaid”, seu primeiro single, acompanhado de uma dessas imagens no dia 1º de Fevereiro e o álbum completo com a nossa capa em Março.

2011, Mapuche and Nothing Here

Então 2011 começou por aqui. E já começou acelerado. Esse vai ser um ano de finalizações, de muitos acabamentos a mão.

Vários projetos estão sendo engatilhados e a ansiedade é crescente, mas vamos por partes:

Recebi um convite irrecusável para criar a imagem da capa do primeiro álbum do novíssimo projeto chamado Mapuche. A frente do projeto está Isaac Varzim, produtor do bem sucedido Superpose, um marco na noite de Florianópolis.

Há mais ou menos dois meses ele me fez esse convite, que aceitei na hora. Pude então escutar uma prévia, ainda na pré-produção, e fiquei deslumbrado com a qualidade das músicas. São lindas, intimistas e muitas vezes melancólicas, tudo que eu adoro. Ficamos então discutindo uma imagem que seria a ideal.

Na semana passada recebi as músicas finalizadas e confesso que produzir escutando fez toda a diferença. O conceito inicial da primeira reunião se mantém, mas pequenos detalhes que foram modificados e acrescentados fazem toda a diferença - e dão mais segurança.

Estou trabalhando na máscara, que logo vai evoluir para uma camisa, depois look inteiro, engolindo e envolvendo quem estiver vestindo.

Essa será a base. Em seguida vou desenvolver alguns acessórios com fio de cobre para sobrepor e por fim uma estampa em vídeo será projetada sobre o tecido, finalizando o styling.

Agora, preciso compartilhar que a primeira ideia foi essa:

Queria que a peça inteira derivasse de uma camisa, envolvendo a pessoa. Mas depois que botei isso pra fora resolvi ser menos literal e relaxar.

Sigo trabalhando durante essa semana nessa peça que batizei de "The Nothing Here", inspirado em uma das músicas do Mapuche. ^^

Então esse é o estágio em que encontra-se The Face of 2011. O que vocês acham? Está suficientemente Rodarte?

Não está pronta, acabamentos são necessários, mas já dá pra ter uma boa idéia de como vai ficar.

O resultado final vai ser bem próximo disso, mas para apresentá-lo estou morrendo de vontade de (ter tempo para) fazer um vídeo ou trabalhar com uma qualidade melhor de imagem, levando para um outro nível, de trabalho finalizado e não work in progress. So this is the stage where The Face of 2011 is right now. What do you think? Is it Rodartist enough?

It's not ready yet, finishings are necessaries, but you can have a pretty good idea of how it's gonna look like when it's done.

The final look will be very close to this, but to present it I'm dying to (have time to) make a video or work with a better quality image, taking it to a whole new level, much more like a final result than a work in progress. If someone get interested in comming to Jaragua do Sul to help me on this, be my guest. ^^

Você ajudou a escolher e está decidido: Rodarte é a cara de 2011!

Estarei produzindo nos próximos dias uma máscara impulsionada pela coleção de verão 2011 dessa marca norte-americana.

Nessa temporada as irmãs e designers da marca, Kate e Laura, olharam diretamente para sua infância na Califórnia e apresentaram na passarela uma leitura de conforto e aconchego, com muitas referências a natureza, sobreposições de texturas e incríveis estampas de madeira.

Partindo desse mesmo princípio eu também faço esse mesmo movimento de olhar para a minha própria infância em busca de referência e eis que algo de muito concreto surge.

Durante meados dos anos 80/90 morei em um apartamento no Sul do Brasil que tinha na sala de estar uma cortina com uma estampa abstrata de montanhas e árvores. Sempre gostei muito desse tecido, que fazia combinação com as almofadas do sofá, e quando a decoração do apartamento mudou, pedi para minha mãe guardar a cortina com a intenção de um dia usar para fazer algo. Muitas vezes esse material veio a tona, já quis fazer um casaco, uma calça e várias outras coisas, o que fez com que a cortina ficasse guardada por cerca de uns... 15 anos. Agora, finalmente, darei vida nova a ela na The Face of 2011.

You made your choice and now it's decided: Rodarte is The Face of 2011!

I'll be featuring in the next few days a mask driven by the Spring 2011 collection of the North American brand, where the designers and sisters Kate and Laura showcased a beautiful interpretation of confort and cosiness inspired by their own childhood on Northern California. There were several references to nature, mixture of textures and some amazing wood prints.

From this same principle I'm also taking a look backwards, to my own childhood, searching for references and behold, something of substance emerges.

During the mid 80s / early 90s I lived in a apartment which had this curtain with an abstract print of trees and mountains, matching with some pillows, which I always loved it. When was time to change de apartment's decoration I asked for my mom to keep this fabric so one day I could make something of it. For several times this fabric came up, I planned to make a coat of it, then some trousers and now, 15 years later (at least), I'll finally give a new life to that curtain.

From the woods of California to the curtains of Criciuma, come and join me on the birth of The Face of 2011!^^

Então esse é o estágio em que se encontra a máscara que estou produzindo no momento. Don't Shoot (I'm A Man) foi o nome que acabei escolhendo. É o título de uma faixa do novo álbum do Devo, mas a razão de eu ter escolhido não tem nada a ver com a banda (apesar de o disco estar incrível, não é mesmo? - aqui tem o Torrent, a que possa interessar). Estava procurando alguma referência masculina, já que estou pensando em casaco e camisas masculinas e quando vi o nome da música achei perfeito. Além de fazer todo o sentido.

Não estou feliz com alguns elementos da máscara. Ainda há várias coisas a serem feitas, mas a parte listrada já vejo que não vai funcionar. Não gostei do efeito duro, esticado que ficou (é pra ser um pedaço de uma camisa). Vou refazer essa parte, maior e mais solta. Preciso pesar penos a mão. Aliás, já senti uma mudança enorme enquanto fazia a modelagem dessa peça em um pequeno detalhe tão óbvio - mas só agora que mudei consegui perceber - que fico até constrangido de falar. O que aconteceu foi que parei de me preocupar em economizar e aproveitar pedaços de tecidos durante a moulage e passei a trabalhar com mais liberdade e tudo fluiu com mais naturalidade. Estúpido, não?

Preciso de uns dois dias sem interrupções pra me dedicar a ela mas essa semana não vou conseguir pois vou ficar off em função do trabalho. ^^

So this is the stage where the mask that I'm working on at the moment is. Don't Shoot (I'm A Man) is the name I've choosen and is the title of a song from Devo's new album, but this is not about Devo. Despite their new album sounds amazing (you can download the Torrent here), I was searching for a name with some kind of masculine reference, since I'm thinking about men's jackets and shirts.

I'm not happy with some elements in this mask. There's a lot of work to put on it, but I can see already that the striped part is not working. Is supposed to be a piece of a shirt, but it looks too stiff and tiny. I'll redo that part more loose and volumous. I need to loosen up a bit my hand.

I guess a need more one or two days without interruption to devote myself to it.^^

Acabo de encontrar essa imagem da entrada do desfile da Missoni que está começando agora em Milão. Seria influência do Face Couture no prêt-à-porter italiano?

Update: descobri que se trata de uma exibição em Milão chamada "One Size Fits All" onde o artista italiano Ivano Atzori convidou alguns designers para produzirem essas máscaras. All set up for the return of posts around here, the new instalations are already on. A new sewing machine is operating on 220W and soon I'll be releasing some images from new pieces.

I'm also about to anounce the next live broadcasting section. I still can't reveal what is all about, but I can say that it's going to be very tasteful and will have the participation of a few very lucky guests. Stay tuned!

Gente, as coisas andam meio paradas por aqui, eu sei. O que está acontecendo é que estou em meio há algumas (ótimas) mudanças, por isso não está sobrando tempo para me dedicar às máscaras.

Estou mudando de cidade, então tenho indo e vindo e não estou conseguindo parar muito em lugar nenhum. Preciso fazer a minha mudança e me instalar definitivamente para voltar a produzir. Tenho que montar um estúdio no apartamento novo, então calculo que levarei algumas semanas até voltar a costurar. Enquanto isso, sigo acumulando idéias. Prometo que volto o mais rápido possível!

Por esse ser um projeto paralelo e não-comercial, logo acaba sendo o primeiro a sofrer as conseqüências. Mas não paro de pensar nunca nas minhas máscaras, tão importantes para mim, e essas poucas semanas que precisamos nos separar me fazem viver com adivinha o quê me seguindo a cada passo? CULPA. ^^

Hey everyone,

I know that things are a little bit slow around here. The thing is, I’m going through some (great) changes, so there is no time left for working on the masks.

I am moving to another city, so I’ve been coming and going, not staying enough anywhere. I need to move permanently and install myself to come back productive as I like. I’ll have to put together a little studio in my new apartment, so I’m estimating a couple of week so I can come back sewing. Meanwhile the ideas keep coming. I promess that I’ll be back as soon as possible!

As this is a non commercial side project, it end up being the first one to suffer the consequences, but I never stop thinking about my masks, that are so important to me. And these few weeks apart makes me keep on living with, guess what, following me every step: GUILT.^^

Estou trabalhando numa nova máscara que será usada pela hostess da Devassa + lançamento da nova edição da Catarina, nessa quinta em Florianópolis.

O único pedido foi que a máscara não cobrisse completamente o rosto, já que Corinne Werner estará recebendo e se comunicando com os convidados. Nada mais justo.

A idéia é uma profusão de laços – remetendo a gravatas-borboleta - envolvendo o rosto e é completamente diferente de todas as peças que eu já fiz até agora. Ainda não sei se entrará para a coleção, mas mesmo sendo diferente de tudo, encaixa completamente com a estética das outras máscaras. Talvez eu deva fazer mais algumas versões dela, criando uma ponte com as outras peças.

Enfim, o resultado está saindo dentro do esperado (o que é otimo) e se você está em Florianópolis poderá ver pessoalmente a Bow Wow Mask essa noite lá na Devassa.

I’m working on this new mask that will be worn by the hostess from Devassa + Catarina Mag party, this Thursday in Florianópolis.

The only request was that the mask didn’t cover the whole face, since Corinne Werner will receive and communicate with the guests. Fair enough.

The idea is a loop profusion - referring to bow ties - around the face and it’s completely different from all the other pieces that I’ve done so far. I still don’t know if it will be part of the collection, but at the same time that is different, fits perfectly with the other mask’s esthetics. Maybe I should make another version from it in order to build a link with the other pieces.

Anyway, the result is the result is coming out as expected (which is great) and if you are in Florianópolis you can see in person tonight The Bow Wow Mask at Devassa.

And for the rest of the world, I’ll show it here tomorrow!^^

Tenho procurado olhar para algumas referências mais clássicas, ricas e ostensivas, a fim adicionar mais sofisticação à coleção. Vou trabalhar o desapego conceitual e compartilhar algumas:

1. Amadeus (1984)

“Amadeus” é um épico visualmente deslumbrante com direção de arte e figurino sensacionais, que conta uma história de trapaça e mágoa profunda tendo como pano de fundo a trajetória do compositor alemão Mozart no século XVIII.

Não perca a cena do baile de máscaras em 2:20 e levante a mão se você acha que Sofia Coppola bebeu dessa fonte em “Maria Antonieta”.

2. I Clowns (1970)

Outra obra cinematográfica que recentemente entrou pro meu ranking de favoritos é “I Clowns” do Fellini. Sim, o diretor italiano tem um longa metragem inteiro sobre PALHAÇOS. E se tratando de Fellini o resultado só poderia ser um orgasmo visual. Lindo e decadente.

Tem até um desfile em 6:15.

3. Klaus Nomi

E o por fim, mas não menos importante, o tenor alemão que foi abduzido pela cena new wave de Nova Iorque nos anos 70. Uma das minhas referências em tempo integral favoritas: Klaus Nomi.

Muita atenção nesse rufo incrível que ele usa no pescoço. Logo logo ele estará aqui nas minhas mãos em carne, osso e tricoline.^^

I’ve been looking for a few more classics, rich and ostensives references, in order to bring more sophistication to the collection. I’ll work the detachment of concept and share a few:

1. “Amadeus" is an visualy stunning epic with sensational art direction and costumes, that tells a history about cheating and bitterness that has as background the life of the German composer Mozart, in the 18^th century.

Check out the masked ball scene at 2:20 and raise your hands if you think this scene has inspired Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Anoinette”.

2. Another film work that recently took a place in my top favorites is Fellini’s “I Clowns”. Yes, the Italian film maker has an entire movie about CLOWNS. And when it comes to Fellini the result could only be a visual orgasm. Beautiful and decadent.

It even has an Clown’s fashion show on 6:15!

3. And last but not least, the German tenor who was abducted by the New York 70’s new wave scene. One of my favorites full time references, Klaus Nomi.

Attention to the gorgeous ruff on his neck. Soon it will be here in my hands, in flesh, bones and cotton.^^

In the last post I wrote about a "shirt" that I was aiming to builit to be used under the jacket, finishing the look. Here it is.

The entire piece was made in one night, using a print that you may have seen around here before. Now I need to finish the jacket to finally achieve "Unknown Pleasures".^^

It's also a little too tight right now, so as I'm planing to add a shirt under it, I have to replace one of the parts in order to give a little more confort.^^

Então que depois de ter terminado a, agora conhecida como, “Like a Lady Mask”, eu ainda estava com uma pontinha de vontade de usar aquelas franjas que eu tinha, e que na primeira tentativa não havia funcionado. Pensei que o melhor uso seria em uma peça toda preta, bem dramática. Um cetim aqui, uma renda ali, um tule pra dar volume e pronto.

Não funcionou. Rodei com essas franjas a máscara inteira e foi parar lá no topo, na gola. A cereja negra do bolo que não deu certo. Nem vou continuar. Já criei uma antipatia tão grande por essas franjas que nem quero mais ver na minha frente. Não rolou, não rolou. E perdi um tempo precioso pra chegar nessa conclusão. Próxima!^^

So after finished the, now known as, “Like a Lady Mask”, I was still feeling an urge for those fringes that didn’t work on the first try.

I thought the best use for it would be in a total black, very dramatic piece. Some satin here, a lace there, a little tule to get some volume and that’s it. Didn’t work. I put those fringes on every possible place and ended up on the colar at the top. The icing on the black cake that went wrong. I won’t go further with this one anymore. I’ve developed such aversion for the fringes that I don’t even want to look at it anymore. And I’ve lost a precious time to realize this. Well… next!^^

Essa franja vai cair fora já já. Me desculpem os abajures, acho ótimo, mas ficou muito armado e estragou o caimento do tecido. Já estou fazendo uma nova saia e aproveitei pra colocar mais volume no babado.^^

Essa nova máscara já está praticamente pronta e resolvi batizá-la de “A Touch of Trech”, devido à referência ao trench coat que eu citei no último post.

Estou gostando da evolução que venho alcançando nos acabamentos. Na última peça, “The Face of NY” já tinha usado um forro de cetim todo estruturado que colocou a máscara num outro nível e estou fazendo o mesmo nessa nova. A máscara fica mais grossa, estruturada e muito mais sofisticada.

Quase lá!^^

It’s almost done this new mask that I’ve decided to name it as “A Touch of Trench”, since there is a slightly inspiration of a trench coat, as I talked about on my last post.

I’m pleased by the evolution that the finishing is getting. I had used a satin structured lining on the last piece, “The Face of NY”, which took the mask to a whole new level, so now I’m using it on this new one again. It makes the mask thicker, structured and much more sophisticated.^^

Novas máscaras a caminho.

Estou produzindo dois modelos simultaneamente, utilizando o tecido com estampa floral que serviu de fundo para o “DISORDER”.
É possível que este seja o último tecido adicionado à coleção. Já tenho uma variedade bem grande e preciso desdobrar em mais modelos. Fiz as contas e já estou utilizando DEZ difentes, contando com esse último! O que é muito, para o tamanho dessa coleção.

Não, espera. Tem mais um tule de malha que eu quero usar. Humm...

Enfim, esses são os dois modelos que estou trabalhando no momento:

O primeiro, resultado do “DISORDER”, é inspirado pela modelagem de um trench coat.

E o segundo pega carona no mesmo tecido.
Estou sentindo uma vibe anos 50, com essa saia rodada. Mas nem é intencional.

Já estou trabalhando nessas duas peças juntas, mas estava sem câmera nos últimos dias para registrar. Hoje à noite fotografo o estágio atual de ambas.

As duas ainda estão sem nome. Sugestões são bem-vindas.^^

New masks on the way.

I’m working on two pieces simultaneously, using that floral print from the background of “DISORDER”.
It’s possible that this is the last fabric that I’m adding to the collection, since I already have a huge variety that I need to spread properly among the collection. I did the counting and I realize that I’m using a total of TEN different fabrics. Which is a lot considering the size of this collection.

No, wait. There is one stretching tule that I still want to use. Hum…

Anyway, these are the two pieces that I’m working on at the moment:

The first one is a result from “DISORDER” and it is inspired by a trench coat’s pattern.

The second one follows the same path, using the same fabric, but I’m feeling a 50’s vibe here, with this ruffled skirt - not intentional indeed.

I’m already working on both pieces together, but I was without a camera last couple of days, so tonight I’ll register the stage where they are right now.

Both of them are still untitled. Suggestions are welcome.^^

A transmissão ao vivo da produção de "DISORDER" ontem a noite foi incrível! Obrigado a todos que ficaram com a gente. Soube que algumas pessoas tiveram dificuldades com o site que a gente usou pra transmitir, o Twitcam.com, e não conseguiram assistir. Não sei o que rolou, mas vou investigar para uma próxima vez.

Agora vou editar as fotos e o resultado apresento aqui ainda nessa semana! Aguardem.^^

PS: Só para lembrar, hoje é o aniversário de 30 anos da morte de Ian Curtis, esse blog fez uma seleção super legal de covers do Joy Division.

Control is the biography of Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, taking his story from schoolboy days of 1973 to his suicide on the eve of the band's first American tour in 1980.

In this time we see Curtis grow from David Bowie-infatuated teen to Sex Pistols-inspired punk, and eventually to rising new wave star.

The movie explores the pressures he felt, from his epilepsy, a failing marriage, his new lover, and a band that relied on him - all in an attempt to explain his decision to hang himself at the age of 23.

The movie is based on Deborah Curtis's biography "Touching from a Distance" .

Todo o trabalho será transmitido ao vivo e você poderá acompanhar tudo aqui no blog e pelo twitter a partir das 20h, horário de Brasília.

Essa será uma ótima oportunidade de interagir com o projeto e se divertir com a gente!

Next Monday, 17 May, Face Couture Project will be featuring “DISORDER”, a new experimental photoshoot based on life and look of Joy Division’s lead singer Ian Curtis.

The whole work will be live broadcasting and you’ll be able to follow everything here on the blog and on twitter.

We’ll start at 20:00 Brazilian local time. We know that for those who are in Europe may be a little late (Midnight in London), but if you are a late nighter like us, this is a great opportunity to interact with our mask project and have fun with us!

Novo editorial "DISORDER" terá transmissão ao vivo!

Quem vem acompanhando o blog há um certo tempo sabe que as duas últimas máscaras saíram como resultado de um mini editorial/exercício chamado “Brainstorm” fotografado com a intenção de gerar uma intimidade maior com tecidos e materiais que venho usando na produção das peças.

A idéia para esse editorial começou com uma ingênua experimentação num final de noite usando pedaços de roupas e sobras de tecidos encontrados por acaso na casa de uma amiga. Fizemos algumas fotos que acabaram se desdobrando num conceito bem mais complexo.

Com a intenção de buscar mais possibilidades resultantes dessa aproximação com roupas e tecidos, anuncio o próximo editorial/exercício do Face Couture, marcado para a próxima segunda-feira, 17 de maio: DISORDER.

Sob o nome de uma das músicas do Joy Division, as fotos terão Ian Curtis como referência.

Vou tentar aliar a estética e referências da obra do vocalista à proposta work in progress desse projeto.

A grande novidade é que o trabalho todo poderá ser acompanhado em tempo real aqui no blog, com transmissão ao vivo via webcam!

Fica marcado para segunda-feira então. Vou informando ao longo da semana mais detalhes e o horário.^^

Who’ve been following the blog for some time now knows that the last two masks came out as a result from a mini photo shoot/exercise named “Brainstorm”, shot with the intention to bring more intimacy to the fabrics and materials that I’ve been using on the pieces.

The idea for that photoshoot started as a naïve play with rests of clothing and fabrics found in a friend’s house one night. We took some pictures that ended up evolving to a much more complex concept.

With the intention in searching for more possibilities as results from this intimacy with clothes and fabrics, I now announce Face Couture’s new exercise, scheduled for next Monday: DISORDER.

Named under one of Joy Division’s song, this shooting will have Ian Curtis as main inspiration.

I’ll try to combine the vocalist’s aesthetics with the work in progress enviroment of this project.

The big news are that the whole shooting will be live broadcasted here on the blog!
Soon I’ll post more details and the exact time of the transmission. Stay tuned.^^

WORK IN PROGRESS: A toast to "The Face of New York"

Mudanças consideráveis (para o bem) na “TFONY”! Resolvi fazer uso do bom e velho tule. Pensei que terminaria tudo em apenas mais uma noite de trabalho, mas com as novas alterações vou precisar de, no mínimo, outra. Vou usar um forro todo estruturado agora, o que será como fazer uma nova máscara inteira. Tudo pelo acabamento.Veja a evolução do molde:

Acabei recebendo algumas visitas durante a noite, que acabou resultando em brinde àquele velho sentimento que está sempre entre nós.

Pausa para o final de semana. Volto com a mão na máscara segunda-feira e uma novidade quentíssima.^^

Considerable changes (for the good) on “TFONY”. I’ve decided to make use of the good and old tule.

I thought I would finishing the whole thing in just one more working night, but with the new alterations I’ll need, at least, another one. I’ll be using a structured lining, which will be like make a whole new mask. Everything for the finishing.

I ended up having some visitors during the night, which resulted in a toast to an old feeling that is always among us.

Estou trabalhando na nova peça, que aos poucos vai tomando forma.

Comecei sem muitas pré-definições - não fiz o desenho antes de iniciar. O que eu sabia que queria dela era:

- Tapar os olhos e revelar a boca: sexy;
- Usar a parte do tecido com “The New York Times” estampado em cima dos olhos;
- Usar golas de camisa – denovo/sempre/mais é mais/obcecado;
- Zíper.

O primeiro passo foi desenvolver a modelagem tendo isso em mente.

Depois passar a moulage para o papel...

... o que me levou a isso:

Ironia do destino: uma das manchetes da estampa fala sobre Darwinismo X Catolicismo – acabei de perceber enquanto selecionava as fotos para esse post. Quão apropriado, não?

Amanhã inicio a construção de um protótipo para testar essa modelagem. Não posso arriscar fazer direto no tecido original porque só tenho uma chance com ele!^^

I’m working on this new piece that is taking it's shape now.
I’ve started with no defaults – I haven't made any draws before I started it. What I had in mind was:

- Covering the eyes and revealing the mouth: sexy;
-Using the fabric that has “The New York Times” print over the eyes;
-Working with shirt collars – again/always/more is more/obsessed;
-Using zipper

The first step was developing the moulage with all that in mind. Then, transferring the pattern to paper.

Destiny's irony: one of the NYT print's headlines is about "Darwinism X Catholicism" – I’ve just realized it while selecting the images for this post. How appropriate, isn’t it?

Tomorrow I’ll start building a prototype to test the pattern. I can’t risk to make it straight away using the original fabric as I only have one shot with it.^^

Precisei parar um pouco a Holy Mask porque não tem ninguém aqui para vestir e os detalhes finais só posso acertar provando em uma cabeça de verdade. Minha cabeça de moulage só dá conta até certo ponto.

Mas a boa notícia é que está tudo ok e o novo tecido é BEM melhor.

Enquanto isso...

Estou decidindo qual será a próxima peça. É possível que seja a segunda resultante do “Brainstorm” , com essa estampa incrível do The New York Times que eu estou louco para usar:

I’m having to take a break with the Holy Mask because there is no one available here for fitting and the next adjustments requires a real human head. My moulage head just works till certain point.

The good news is that everything is fine and the new fabric is MUCH better.

Meanwhile…

I’m thinking about the next piece and it’s possible that I'll choose one more result from the “Brainstorm” photo shoot. The one that uses this amazing The New York Times print, that I’m looking forward to work with.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Heaven Can Wait

Parece que a Holy Mask está amaldiçoada.

Estava confiante de que iria terminar ela em apenas mais algumas horas. De acordo com a idéia inicial a máscara já estava quase pronta, mas quando fui fazer a prova ficou evidente que estava faltando algo.

Achei que seria uma boa idéia adicionar mais uma camada ao “look” e resolvi fazer parte de uma camisa sob a jaqueta. Como já havia feito algo semelhante para a Clowny Mask, pensei que seria uma pequena alteração. Foi então que começou uma sucessão de – muitos - pequenos erros.

Frustração...

Enfim, o grande problema foi o tecido que eu escolhi que não colaborou em nada. Depois de tentar seguir em frente deixando passar alguns erros, precebi que não ia rolar MESMO e parei para corrigir os danos.

Agora eu tenho a máscara toda aberta novamente e vou refazer a camada da camisa em um outro tecido.

Preciso terminar isso hoje. Que o Senhor esteja comigo.^^

Turns out the Holy Mask is cursed.

I was confident that I would finish this one in just a few more hours. According to the initial idea, the mask was practically done, but when I did the fitting it became evident that something was missing.

I thought it would be a good idea to add a new layer, so I decided to make part of a shirt under the jacket. As I already did something similar with the Clowny Mask, I thought it would be just a small alteration. That was when a succession of – several - little mistakes began.

Frustration…

Anyway, the problem here was the type of fabric that I've choose, which didn’t collaborated AT ALL. After trying to keep on with some mistakes, I realized that it wouldn’t work, so I've stopped for some damage control.

Now I have pieces of a mask again and I’ll redo the shirt layer with a better fabric.^^

Frente da Holy Mask quase pronta!

Tá, eu sei que não se deve começar pela parte mais fácil - e isso serve pra tudo na vida, não é mesmo? Mas queria ver resultados rápidos.

Vou fazer algumas modificações ainda, como diminuir um pouco a largura das faixas.

Agora vem o mais difícil, que é a parte de trás como aqueles detalhes de alfaiataria... lá vou eu.^^

Ok, I know I shouldn't start with the easy part - and that goes for everything in life, isn't it? But I wanted quick results.I'll still make some adjustments, like take off a little bit on the edges of the bandages.

Now comes the hardest part: the back side with the tailored details... here I go.^^

The Clowny Mask: done!

Ontem finalmente consegui terminar a Clowny Mask. Ufa!

Essa foi super trabalhosa, cheia detalhes, mas tudo dentro do previsto. Sinto que estou conseguindo fazer uma síntese melhor e mais elaborada entre roupa e máscara. Acabei misturando cinco tecidos nessa!

Claro que acabamentos ainda serão feitos, mas é possível ter uma boa noção do resultado final.

Em breve mais detalhes sobre a próxima peça. ^^

Yesterday I finally finished the Clowny Mask!

This one was very elaborated, full of details as I predicted, but I feel I'm reaching a better synthesis between clothes and masks now. I ended up mixing five different types of fabrics!

Some finishing will still be made, of course, but you can get a good feel of the final result.
